What is a wellbeing strategy?
A wellbeing strategy is different from Occupational Health & Safety and general HR matters, in that it is focusing on the person holistically - not only their physical safety but their happiness and personal wellbeing.
A strategy typically works to a 12-month cycle and encompasses everything from physical, mental wellness, and social initiatives, National and International observances. Your wellbeing strategy should reflect what is important to your people, and it should work in support of other business areas such as HR, Occupational Health & Safety, Change Management, and environmental stressors.
What makes a good wellbeing strategy?
The number one most important thing to the success of your wellbeing strategy is that you are doing it for the right reasons. Don’t have a wellbeing strategy to tick a box - have it because you genuinely care about your team and you want them to thrive. When your motivations are in the right place, the reception is much warmer and ultimately more successful.
In my experience I have found the most successful wellbeing strategies have a few things in common:
1. It hinges off the back of a wellbeing survey (so you’re not just assuming what is important to your team)
2. Your leadership team are actively involved and promoting it
3. It’s all brought together in an easy-to-access area along with your other “business as usual” content (this is typically your intranet and in most cases SharePoint).

People are like icebergs, and who we meet at work is only the tip of who they are. It’s sometimes hard to know what other stressors your team have in their lives outside of the workplace. Engaging your team to bring their whole selves to work, and to value them personally and professionally is proven to increase productivity, reduce sick leave and increase long term service.

When I moved back to my native New Zealand I thought a lot about the things I had learnt over the past decade, and how my skill set can be applied to businesses that are smaller. I was fortunate enough to road test my theories in a business that currently employs 30 people. I have distilled my corporate career into a program that is accessible regardless of if you employ 10 people or 100 people.
